The Art of Computer Designing is a book by Osamu Sato, first published in 1993 by Graphic-Sha. It serves as a tutorial to approaching vector graphics with Sato's design philosophy, providing many examples of his work to demonstrate the possibilities of using different shapes or techniques. Copies were bundled with a Mac format 'gift disk' that includes a Director animation, pictograms, and the OS Compu Bold font.

2020 edition
An updated version was published by Colpa Press in Spring 2020. This edition contains a new cover and introduction by Sato, an updated translation by Kensuke Hidaka, and some additional examples. An edition of 250 copies was announced (later reduced to 200). In 2024, a second edition of 300 copies was printed.
Compu Movie (コンピュムービー) is a compilation of six videos produced by Directors Company and distributed on VHS by Tierrart. The visuals and editing were done primarily on a Macintosh, something that was heavily emphasized in the tape's marketing. Copies were only available via mail-order, which would later contribute to its elusive status.

Before its full discovery on 27 April 2024, several clips were released by Osamu Sato himself, as detailed in the following sections. These clips include:

* A 22-second clip of a 3d animation titled Deme Kume Chame-go.
A print advertisement for Compu Movie was discovered by Chia, which contained a list of its contents and screenshots from the film. In left-to-right top-to-bottom order, the screenshots appear to be sourced from:

* The Face (Exactly identical to a frame found in The Esoteric Retina version)
* Alphabetical Animals (Same screenshot of the letters spelling "LOVE" found in other media)

In February of 2022, we got our closest ever look at Compu Movie with a 1994 edition of DIG MAG, a digital magazine for Mac. The disc contains a virtual art gallery with work by Sato, Hideki Nakazawa, and others.

In March of 2022, an interview of Sato with a Japanese magazine named Quit was unearthed. In the interview, Sato discusses Compu Movie and his early work. The scans were made by the user beanstalk, and shared by FELON. A transcription of this interview was also made by Chia.

In April of 2024, Sato posted a tweet with the first known image of Compu Movie's cover in full color, claiming to have found it in storage. A copy of Compu Movie was sold in a lucky bag at Sato's April 13 live event in Tokyo. It was purchased by community member Nnnn and the purchase was funded by mav6771. Digitization is currently being planned.

Deme Kume Chame-Go
In Sato's Next Beat interview, there are brief clips of a 3D animation titled "Deme Kume Chame-Go". Shown below this title is the text "コンピュムービーより", which translates to "From Compu Movie".

The Face
"The Face", also known as "Face the Music" is a song by Osamu Sato with several different mixes. A portion of this music video appeared on the "DIG MAG" CD-ROM. It appears to be an early version of The Esoteric Retina's "Face the Music" video, bearing several similarities.

Astor Magic, Golden Flowers
Not much is known about these videos. "Astor Magic" is a song by The Sync off of their album Beat the System. "Golden Flowers" is speculated to be by Sato, because of an item in Eastern Mind with the same name.

Alphabetical Animals
The July 1994 edition of Wired magazine features a short interview with Sato, and also mentions the presence of an Alphabetical Orgasm video on Compu Movie. They most likely meant to say Alphabetical Animals instead, since the artwork in the video matches that series and it's labeled as such in the print advertisement and Next Beat interview.

A presumably clipped version of the full video is available on OSD's YouTube Channel, titled "ABC.mov".

The "DIG MAG" CD-ROM features an interactive version of this video, with animations for every letter and several words ("LOVE", "AND", "PEACE", "FOOL"). These animations appear to be the same as featured in screenshots, but possibly run too quickly in emulators. The screenshot featuring Sato's face doesn't appear here, but rather in the CD-ROM's "I LOVE YOU" video.

I LOVE YOU
This video on the OSD310 Youtube channel was speculated to be from Compu Movie for years before the print advertisement lent more credence to this theory.

The description claims it was produced for Tierrart, the same company which released Compu Movie. Like ABC.mov, it features elements (in this case, numbers) from Alphabetical Animals. It also appears to fade out prematurely, implying there's more to be seen.

Lastly, since several of the clips from the OSD310 channel ended up originating from The Esoteric Retina (Xia-Che, Trancemigration, The Earth is Round), it seems plausible that this would also be the case with Compu Movie.

Another portion of this video was found on the "DIG MAG" CD-ROM. Most of the soundtrack had never been heard before, except for one section which also features in a different part of the Youtube upload. The motif of a spinning Sato portrait appears in this video, which may have partially inspired "The Earth is Round".
Compu Movie (コンピュムービー) is a compilation of six videos produced by OutSide Directors Company and distributed on VHS by Tierrart.

In response to the question "Will [Chu-Teng] be a work in the same style as Tong-Nou?", Sato stated his intent to make the series a trilogy based on a Chinese/Indian "four levels of reality" system (which this wiki does not currently know the official name of): Tong-Nou representing the world above ground, Chu-Teng representing heaven, and Kai-Shi representing the world below ground. In this system the fourth level is infinite and completely separate from everything else, which is why no game was planned around it - though it may be the "Ge-teng" mentioned in the Chu-Teng Tablet.
Homosexual is a series of artworks created through a collaboration between Osamu Sato and fellow artist Hideki Nakazawa. The exhibition was held at Tierrart Gallery in Tokyo from April 6 - 24, 1993.

A book compiling all of the featured artworks was published by Tom's Box, limited to 300 copies. The book could either be purchased on its own, or with a bonus floppy disk containing a Macromedia Director animation. Its existence was not well known to the community until copies appeared for sale at Sato's 2017 exhibition All Things Must Be Equal, sans disk. Nakazawa himself provided a copy of the animation file after being contacted.
Rhythm 'n' Face Supplementary Reader (リズムンフェイス副読本) is a 48-page book by Directors Company, published by Asmik Ace Entertainment. It's believed that the book was bundled with copies of the game as part of a promotion.

The first half of the book shows how to design characters using combinations of circles, triangles, and squares, similar to The Art of Computer Designing. The second half is more focused on the game itself, explaining the concept and how to play. It also provides lists of inputs to create example designs in the game's bonus free paint stages. The remaining pages feature impressions from various magazine editors and artists, as well as art that they created in the game. The corners of most pages contain photos labeled "On the Street," which depict real world examples of the basic shapes.
Rhythm 'n' Face (リズムンフェイス, Rizumunfeisu) is a rhythm video game developed by Directors Company and published by Asmik Ace Entertainment for the Playstation. A companion book with demonstrations on how to design with basic shapes, as well as designs contributed by various artists and journalists, was released alongside it.

Gameplay
The goal of every stage in Rhythm 'n' Face is to manipulate shapes (squares, triangles and circles) to create "faces" in sync with the stage music's beat. Pressing the Circle, Square, and Triangle buttons will select the respective shape and place it in the center of the grid, pressing the L1 and R1 buttons will increase and decrease the size of the shape, and pressing the D-Pad buttons will move the shape on the grid.

Each stage is comprised of a series of two short phases: a computer player will select a shape and manipulate it into a specific size and position, and the player must then copy the computer player's actions while keeping on-beat. If the player doesn't get a shape near the correct position and size before the end of their phase, they lose one life. If the player loses all four of their lives, they must restart the stage. If the player keeps correctly placing shapes, they will rack up a combo and gain a life back (assuming they have lost any). If the combo is high enough, the game will start the player's shapes in a random position on the grid to throw them off and further challenge them to keep their combo going.

At the end of a stage, the player is ranked in two categories: "Rhythm" and "Art", on a scale from 0 to 50. "Rhythm" measures how well the player did in keeping on-beat (as well as how many extra actions they did successfully), and "Art" is used to measure how accurate the player's face is to the intended face.

Every level's face also has an alternative form that can be created. These alternate faces are shown briefly on the loading screen when playing a level for the first time, and can also be found in the game's manual and website. Making these alternative faces will reward the player with additional Art points.

Completing all four routes will unlock the ability to toggle three additional settings in the options menu:
* Texture: Overlays a texture onto every shape.
* Fukuwarai: Makes the active shape as well as all previously placed shapes invisible until the end of the stage.
* Duet: Enables a turn-based multiplayer mode. Whenever one player fails to move a shape correctly, it will become the other player's turn.

If you get 350 total points on any route, that route's bonus stage will be unlocked. The bonus stages act as free-paint modes, allowing you to make faces without having to worry about rhythmic timing or copying the computer player's actions.

LSD: Dream Emulator is an exploration video game developed by Outside Directors Company and published by Asmik Ace Entertainment for the Playstation. The concept for the game was based on OSD employee Hiroko Nishikawa's dream diary, which she kept for over a decade. The diary was released as a book called Lovely Sweet Dream to go along with the game.

Release
The game released in Japan on 22 October 1998, alongside the music CD LSD and Remixes, the previously mentioned book, and a bonus one-song music CD titled Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites bundled with limited copies.

On August 11, 2010, the game was re-released on the Japanese PlayStation Store under the PS1 Classics section, for ¥617 (equivalent to $5 at the time). This version received a D (17+) rating from CERO (the Japanese equivalent of the ESRB or PEGI).

LSD: Dream Emulator has gained a cult following because of its surreal contents and its scarcity, commonly placed in the top 5 on lists of the rarest/most expensive PlayStation games. Copies on eBay range in price from $700-$1,500.

Limited/Normal edition discrepancy
Numerous marketing materials advertise the game to have two versions: a limited version including the bonus CD and a normal version which does not have the bonus CD; however all ~200 copies documented since the early 2000's have been the limited edition. This paradoxically implies that the "normal" release had less copies produced than the limited edition and may not even exist.

A PlayStation archival website makes the distinction between the limited edition (SLPS-01556) and normal edition (supposedly with the ID number SLPS-01642), which only raises more questions as the ID given to the normal version would mean Sony catalogued it after the limited version.

Gameplay
The game takes place in a first-person perspective in a 3D surreal environment. The player's "goal" is to explore said environments. The controls are tank controls; the player can move forwards or backwards, turn, strafe, run, look up and behind.

The game is played in short sequences or "dreams". The initial location of each dream is randomized. The player can access other environments by bumping into objects or going through tunnels, a mechanic named "linking". Bumping into certain special objects, like animal and people, will result in a "stranger" dream.

The environments are usually the same, like a Japanese village or a house, but they may be populated by random objects and the default textures swapped with other textures.

Each dream can be about 10 minutes long, then the player will "wake up". However, if the player falls off a pit or a hole, the dream will be cut short.

After a dream, another "day" passes in-game, and the dream is marked in a graph. The graph rates the dreams in relation to it being an Upper, Downer, Static or Dynamic dream. The more the player plays the game, the textures of the environments change more often. Also, there's the possibility of encountering the Spy, who removes the ability to recall a dream in Flashback.

After a certain number of days, the Flashback option will appear. It allows the player to play an abbreviated version of the last dream they played.

Sometimes, a video or dream journal excerpt may take the place of a regular dream.

Development
The idea of the linking mechanic was derived from Sato's experiences playing racing games. He found them boring as a non-skilled player and envisioned an idea of a game where you were rewarded for smashing the car into a wall and taken somewhere else, believing that to be more entertaining for people bad at those types of games. While trying to work out how to make this mechanic make sense, he had the thought that nothing like that happens in real life, but it could happen in dreams, inspiring the game's setting.

The game's website went live in late 1996. On January 18, 1997, OSD posted an announcement that development had begun.

Rumors
Many, many, completely false rumors have been written about LSD: Dream Emulator. The bulk of them come from the game's peak in popularity during the early 2010's, when no context surrounding it was readily accessible in the west. Such rumors include the game being:
* Developed by a woman.
* Developed by someone who committed suicide.
* Developed by a husband and wife.
* Procedurally generated.

Trivia
* According to OSD, the title refers not to the drug named LSD, rather standing for "Link Speed Dream". This would make the game's full title "Link Speed Dream: Dream Emulator".
* On some emulators, the game's water may rapidly flash different colors. This is not the intended look and does not appear on original hardware.
Chu-Teng (中天, Chūten lit. It is the sequel to Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou.

Copies of the game became elusive in the years following its release, making it a holy grail of sorts for the fan community. At the end of June 2013, an anonymous user on 4chan's /vr/ board came forward with a Mac copy and shared the disc image a few days later.

Development
A hidden message in the game's files by programmer Yasuo Higano reveals that Chu-Teng's code was written in six months. Higano also expresses that he originally joined the industry to work on PlayStation games, so working in the comparatively simple Macromedia Director crushed his ego and made him feel like he wasn't a real programmer. He appears to have left OSD soon after Chu-Teng's release. The company would begin working on PlayStation software within a couple years of his departure.

According to the March 1996 issue of Wired magazine, a North American release of Chu-Teng was planned for mid-1996. Additionally, the June 1996 issue of Taiwanese gaming publication Soft World Magazine mentions that the game was featured at Sony Interactive's booth during that year's E3. Despite this, an official localization ultimately never hit the market.
Bana Bana Ichi-gō: Rolypolys no Sekai Daibōken (バナバナ1号 ローリーポーリーズの世界大冒険, sometimes listed online as ローリーポーリーズの世界旅行, lit. Rolypolys' World Tour) is a 1997 point-and-click adventure game developed by Directors Company and published by Shinko Music Entertainment. It is the sequel to Rolypolys no Nanakorobi Yaoki, which released eight months prior.

Plot
Unlike its predecessor, the game has an overarching plotline involving Otane-chan, a music idol, being kidnapped by an evil Tengu; she can only be freed by the Roly Polys gathering 7 keys scattered around the world. The gameplay centers around the Roly Polys flying to every continent of Earth in Banaten's spaceship, the Banabana Mk. 1, while learning about the geography and culture of various countries.

Former Lost Media Status
Prior to its discovery, several archived listings existed on Japanese auction sites as well as one recent one in July 2020, and one image of the game in-box had surfaced. Aside from several small screenshots on the game's official webpage, no gameplay footage existed online until Rolypolys no Nanakorobi Yaoki was found, which contained a video trailer. This trailer was rendered in-engine, meaning its assets could be ripped.

A playable demo appears on the coverdisc for the January 15, 1998 issue of MacPeople magazine. This demo only contains a portion of the North American area. An ISO file of this disc was shared on October 27, 2021.

Unknown to the community until the full game was found, BakuDD acquired a sealed copy back in 2022. In January of 2023, he told another collector, beanstalk, that he owned it but was hesitant to open it. The two reached a deal where, in exchange for BakuDD opening and dumping the game, beanstalk would buy a limited edition Japanese 3DO game and ship it to BakuDD.

The game was ultimately made available to the wider internet on May 31st, 2023. The checksum data was confirmed on Redump before it was dropped onto the Internet Archive the same day. BakuDD didn't post the link directly, instead teasing its existence in this post to r/osamusato; within minutes, it was found almost simultaneously by several members of the community, with the link initially posted by Camwoodstock & Tori. It was streamed by users adam and Super on the Osamu Sato Discord the same day, and for the next few days, Super would continue to stream the game on the Discord until successfully completing the game.

Known copies
As of May 31st, 2023, there are currently 8 known copies of "Rolypolys no Sekai Daibōken". While it's possible that some of the unaccounted-for copies are the same as others, it is generally accepted that each of these copies are unique, as there is zero evidence to the contrary. Each of these copies are given a conjectural nickname for ease of discussion.
It was released as a hybrid CD-ROM for Macintosh and Microsoft Windows.

Development
The game was submitted to Macromedia's People's Choice Awards competition in 1996, and was selected as a finalist in the 'Kidsware' category. It appeared at the Macromedia User Conference in San Francisco that September, with Sato and representatives from Shinko Music in attendance. It was planned to release in Japan in November, but for unknown reasons, the date was pushed back. Additionally, North American and European releases were considered, under the name "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog," but these ultimately never materialized.
Former Lost Media Status
For a long time, Rolypolys was not available to the general public. Several gameplay clips emerged over the years, but the game as a whole held its lost media status until July 2019 when an online store listing was discovered and posted on Reddit by community member VisualMenace. It was quickly snatched up by another member, Gohald, who later posted scans and a disc image with the assistance of DeeDyne on July 22nd.
Tong-Nou (東脳, Ton'nō lit. East Mind), localized in the west as Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou, is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Directors Company and published by Sony Music Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh.

Its sequel, Chu-Teng, was released in Japan only in 1995.

Plot
Spoiler

The story begins with Rin getting their soul stolen by Tong-Nou, a living "island" with a long history of devouring human souls. Tong-Nou is a giant green head, with his ears, cheeks, and the back of his head leading into a different "land". Each land is themed after one of the five elements of wuxing.

Rin embarks on a journey to Tong-Nou to retrieve his soul. Before doing so, he decides to visit the Yashiro shrine. On the way he meets a white snake who gifts him with the Furoshiki, in which Rin can carry items, and an Amulet, a one-use item that will protect him from death. At the Yashiro shrine, Rin receives a temporary soul from an old man. This temporary soul will last him 49 days.

Upon arriving at Tong-Nou, a strange island in the shape of a human head, Rin dies after the player finds some way to kill him. However, once he does so, he is told that from now he will acquire nine lives, and that his soul exists as five Magatamas scattered across the five lands of Tong-Nou. Only when he has them all may he retrieve his soul. He is given a Mirror, as well as a Nameplate bearing his name.

Then, he is directed to the roots of Mingke-shu, the Tree of Life. Here, he can select one each from a set of two eyes, two noses, and two mouths, to be reborn as a creature bearing those parts. He is given a mission to complete, and instructions on how to complete it. Half of these missions are simple and require little input from the player besides clicks, while the other half involve fulfilling some menial task for one of the four Kings.

When each creature's mission is completed, that creature will also die. Again, Rin is given a Nameplate bearing the creature's name and directed back to the roots of Mingke-shu to be reborn once more as a different creature.

In total, there are eight creatures to be reborn as, and so eight more Nameplates to acquire (Byou, Tou, Sha, Kai, Jin, Retsu, Zen and Gyou).

Once each of the creatures' missions has been accomplished, and all eight Nameplates acquired, Rin is reborn as himself once more, and instructed to go to the Central Mountain Tong-nou and break the seal on the mountain. This is done by placing all nine Nameplates into the seal.

Having broken the seal, Rin heads up the steps to the top of the mountain. Partway up, he encounters an image of Tou-gyou. This image tells him where to acquire four of the Magatamas that make up Rin's soul. Once he speaks to the image while in possession of the four Magatamas, it tells him that he still lacks the power to retrieve his soul. It then gifts him with a Katana Gem containing the force of Earth (Source). Rin must then fill this Gem with four other forces from the other four lands of Tong-Nou. To do so, he must visit the images of Tou-gyou that exist in these lands. Firstly, he must visit Yui-wang, the Land of Desire, to acquire the force of Metal (Eternity), then Mon-chien, the Land of Dreaming, for the force of Water (Change), then Ming-ken, the Land of Life, for the force of Wood (Life), and finally Shi-chieng, the Land of Time, for the force of Fire (Confrontation).

Once the Gem has been filled with all five forces, Rin goes back to the Central Mountain Tong-nou. Tou-gyou's image creates the Katana of Five Forces from the Gem, and tells Rin that the time to recover his soul has come. Rin climbs to the Octagonal Shrine Par-fang at the top of the mountain and enters. Here, statues of the four kings of Tong-Nou have entrapped the fifth and final Magatama of Rin's soul, the Earth Magatama. Rin uses the Katana of Five Forces to set the Magatama free. Then, the empty shell of Rin's soul appears. He places the five Magatamas into the shell and his soul is restored.

Tou-gyou, the king of the Central Mountain, who had also been set free by the Katana, appears in the flesh. He explains to Rin that Tong-Nou is not an island that devours human souls. It is an island that purifies troubled souls. The four kings of the four lands had discovered that they could use the souls' Magatamas for their own selfish needs. They had trapped Tou-gyou in the Octagonal Shrine to prevent him from interfering with their plans, and tore him into eight pieces and scattered them all over the Tong-Nou world. He explains that he had been calling out for a soul to save him, but none had been strong enough to withstand the powers of the four kings and were devoured. Rin's soul, however, was strong enough, and he was able to travel the Tong-Nou world and restore Tou-gyou to health. In doing so, his soul became more powerful than ever before. Rin's soul returns to him once more, and the game ends.
Release
The game was originally released for Macintosh in Japan on May 21, 1994. This release came with a double-sided insert containing a map of Tong-Nou and a message written in the Tong-Nou Alphabet. On October 21, 1995, the game was re-released to coincide with the launch of Chu-Teng, alongside a Windows port.

The US version was published by Sony Imagesoft and released on both platforms in December 1995, after several delays. This version includes 3 tracks from Transmigration and the contents of the Transcript CD that was packaged with limited copies of the album. To commemorate its release, a launch party was held in San Francisco, California, where a selection of Sato's work was flown in from Japan to be displayed. Signed copies from the event have occasionally surfaced on auction sites in the years since.
Trivia
* LSD Revamped shares its name with a fan recreation of LSD, which started development years before this album was released. We can gather that Sato was aware of this project by the inclusion of gameplay footage in one of the music videos. We're left to speculate whether he took inspiration from fan interest, or named it to deliberately obscure it in search results out of spite.
Objectless (also referred to as Objectless: Classic Ambient Works and More) is an album by Osamu Sato, released by Vinyl-On-Demand and Sublime Records. The album consists of remixes of songs from Objectless (1983) along with 2 original tracks.

Background
In spring 2017, Sato received a message from German label Vinyl-On-Demand Records, offering to remaster the original Objectless tape. The founder, Frank Bull, had previously received several inquiries via Discogs to release the tracks after coming forward with images of his own copy. As Sato no longer had the album in his possession, Frank sent him digital transfers of the tracks. Sato was not satisfied with the songs in their original form, and offered to remix them. While Frank didn't like remixes in general, he was pleased with the resulting tracks, and the decision was made to release them later in the year.

Release
A music video for the song Blues Tube was released on the Music Mine YouTube channel on November 16, 2017, the same day the album released on iTunes. The CD version was released the following week on November 22.
It was Sato's first album in nearly 20 years. The album primarily consists of newly recorded tracks and remixes of older material.

Release
Starting in November 2016, short clips of the "Wolfunkadelic" video were shared by CG artist Ichiro Tanida on his Instagram. The full video would be uploaded to Music Mine's YouTube channel on March 3, 2017, followed by the music video for "I Want You" on March 23. On March 31, the album released digitally on iTunes. Copies of the CD could be purchased early at the All Things must Be Equal exhibition, which opened on April 1. Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites is a music CD that came packaged with copies of LSD: Dream Emulator. It consists of a single, exactly 1-hour-long track, unofficially split into different segments in some online downloads. It is a completely unique song containing no elements from LSD and Remixes or the in-game music.

Track listing
* Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites (60:00)

Personnel
Adapted from Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites liner notes.
Transmigration is an album by Osamu Sato, released by Sony Records. Two of its tracks (1 and 3) are featured in Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou, but it doesn't serve as a full OST.

Release
In addition to the standard CD release, a limited edition featuring a bonus Macintosh CD-ROM called Transcript was also produced (apparently an industry first). This CD contains samples of Sato's artwork, his biography, a non-playable demo of Tong-Nou, and renders of the game's characters. A promotional sampler vinyl also exists.

Tracklist
#Tong-Nou (Tong-Nou Theme) (4:27)

Trivia
* Tracks 2, 3, and 4 appear on The Esoteric Retina, along with alternate mixes of each.
