The game released in Japan on 22 October 1998, alongside the music CD [[LSD and Remixes]], the previously mentioned book, and a bonus one-song music CD titled [[Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites]] bundled with limited copies.

On August 11, 2010, the game was re-released on the Japanese PlayStation Store under the PS1 Classics section, for ¥617 (equivalent to $5 at the time). LSD: Dream Emulator has gained a cult following because of its surreal contents and its scarcity, commonly placed in the top 5 on lists of the rarest/most expensive PlayStation games. Copies on eBay range in price from $700-$1,500.

===Limited/Normal edition discrepancy===
Numerous marketing materials advertise the game to have two versions: a limited version including the bonus CD and a normal version which does not have the bonus CD; however all ~200 copies documented since the early 2000's have been the limited edition. This paradoxically implies that the "normal" release had ''less'' copies produced than the limited edition and may not even exist.

A [https://psxdatacenter.com/ PlayStation archival website] makes the distinction between the limited edition ([https://psxdatacenter.com/games/J/L/SLPS-01556.html SLPS-01556]) and normal edition (supposedly with the ID number [https://psxdatacenter.com/games/J/L/SLPS-01642.html SLPS-01642]), which only raises more questions as the ID given to the normal version would mean Sony catalogued it ''after'' the limited version.

In 2024, a Japanese Twitter user posted pictures of a sample copy of the game. These pictures can be found in the gallery below. The Twitter user claims they bought it as a normal copy and only realized this after some time.

==Gameplay==

The game takes place in a first-person perspective in a 3D surreal environment. The player's "goal" is to explore said environments. The controls are tank controls; the player can move forwards or backwards, turn, strafe, run, look up and behind.

The game is played in short sequences or "dreams". The initial location of each dream is randomized. The player can access other environments by bumping into objects or going through tunnels, a mechanic named "[[Linking|linking]]". Bumping into certain special objects, like animal and people, will result in a "stranger" dream.

The environments are usually the same, like a Japanese village or a house, but they may be populated by random objects and the default textures swapped with other textures.

Each dream can be about 10 minutes long, then the player will "wake up". However, if the player falls off a pit or a hole, the dream will be cut short.

After a dream, another "day" passes in-game, and the dream is marked in a graph. The graph rates the dreams in relation to it being an Upper, Downer, Static, or Dynamic dream. The more the player plays the game, the textures of the environments change more often. Also, there's the possibility of encountering the [[Spy]], who removes the ability to recall a dream in Flashback.

After a certain number of days, the Flashback option will appear. It allows the player to play an abbreviated version of the last dream they played.

Sometimes, a video or dream journal excerpt may take the place of a regular dream.

==Development==
The idea of the linking mechanic was derived from Sato's experiences playing racing games. He found them boring as a non-skilled player and envisioned an idea of a game where you were rewarded for smashing the car into a wall and taken somewhere else, believing that to be more entertaining for people bad at those types of games. While trying to work out how to make this mechanic make sense, he had the thought that nothing like that happens in real life, but it could happen in dreams, inspiring the game's setting.<ref>https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2017/11/osamu-sato-interview</ref>

The game's website went live in late 1996. On January 18, 1997, OSD posted an announcement that development had begun.

==Rumors==
Many, many, completely false rumors have been written about LSD: Dream Emulator. The bulk of them come from the game's peak in popularity during the early 2010's, when no context surrounding it was readily accessible in the west. Such rumors include the game being:
* Developed by a woman.
* Developed by someone who committed suicide.
* Developed by a [[Osamu Sato|husband]] and [[Hiroko Nishikawa|wife]].
* Procedurally generated.

'''Homosexual''' is a series of artworks created through a collaboration between [[Osamu Sato]] and fellow artist Hideki Nakazawa. An exhibition of the collaboration was held at Tierrart Gallery in Tokyo from April 6, 1993, to the 24th.

==Concept==
Homosexual was created by Sato and Nakazawa taking 10 minute turns to make a series of artworks. One artist would create an original piece, the other artist would create a piece that incorporated the last piece, the first artist would make a piece with the last piece, and so on. This process would repeat until 24 separate pieces were made. For Homosexual, this process was performed twice, once with Sato being the starting artist and once with Nakazawa starting. This resulted in a total of 48 pieces.

==Book==
A book compiling all of Homosexual's featured artworks was published by Tom's Box, of which only 300 copies were made. The book could either be purchased on its own, or with a bonus floppy disk containing an animation that features its art. The book uses the [[wikipedia:Dos-à-dos_binding#Tête-bêche|tête-bêche]] format, meaning that it has two front covers instead of having a back cover. Depending on which cover the reader starts from, they can go through the series that Sato started or the one that Nakazawa started.

The book's existence was not well known to the community until copies appeared for sale at Sato's 2017 exhibition [[All Things Must Be Equal]], without the bonus floppy disk.

==Animation==
A floppy disk containing a Macromedia Director animation of the art featured in Homosexual was available for purchase alongside the book. The animation file was also included on the CD-ROM ''MacJapan Bros.-ROM'', in the "Special" folder. Nakazawa himself provided a copy of the animation file after being contacted.

'''Maru Sankaku Shikaku''' is a zine by Osamu Sato. It was created for the first Here is Zine exhibition, which was held at Tambourin Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo from August 24 to September 4, 2010. Sato created all of the artwork in this zine using [[●▲■|the app of the same name]].

Only 5 physical copies were produced. The zine was later featured as part of a display of Sato's design work at the Grateful in All Things exhibition in 2020.

Some artwork from the zine was displayed at the 2024-25 exhibit for [[Multiple Personality]].

'''Compu Movie''' (コンピュムービー) is a compilation of six videos produced by [[OutSide Directors Company]] and distributed on VHS by Tierrart. The visuals and editing were done primarily on a Macintosh, something that was heavily emphasized in the tape's marketing. Copies were only available via mail-order, which would later contribute to its elusive status. All songs on Compu Movie were composed by Sato and Shinobu Narita, with the exception of Astor Magic.

"The Face", also known as "Face the Music" is a song by Osamu Sato with several different mixes. It appears to be an early version of [[The Esoteric Retina|The Esoteric Retina's]] "Face the Music" video, bearing many similarities.

===Astor Magic===
"Astor Magic" is a song by The Sync off of their album [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkvyXzE3FFE Beat the System]. This video is unique in mostly using live action footage, and having a laid back atmosphere.

===Golden Flowers===
"Golden Flowers" is a song by Osamu Sato, sharing its name with an [[Golden Flower|item]] in [[Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou]]. Several pieces of imagery in the music video can also be seen in the Tong-Nou Promo Movie.

* Golden Flowers is the only video that has no clips available before the full discovery of Compu Movie.
* The golden head which appears at several points says "おうごんの　はなを　みつけた", which translates to "I found the golden flower".

===Alphabetical Animals===
"Alphabetical Animals" features animated versions of the letters from the [[Alphabetical Animals|art series with the same name]]. A text-to-speech 'sings' through the alphabet at various points. At the end of the video a pair of eyes flashes (which also appear in Xia-Che) rapidly on screen.

===I Love You===
"I Love You" spans a number of moods throughout its 8 minute runtime. The numbers from [[Alphabetical Animals]] can be seen in one black-and-white section. Following this is a design from [[Anonymous Animals]], which transforms into a 3D render more closely resembling an insect. It should be noted the same design also appears in Xia-Che. The motif of a spinning Sato portrait appears in this video, which may have partially inspired "The Earth is Round". A morph effect is also used heavily in one section near the beginning.

A print advertisement for Compu Movie was discovered by Chia, which contained a list of its contents and screenshots from the film. In left-to-right top-to-bottom order, the screenshots appear to be sourced from:

In February of 2022, we got our closest ever look at Compu Movie with a [https://macintoshgarden.org/games/dig-mag-digital-magazine-mac 1994 edition of DIG MAG], a digital magazine for Mac. The disc contains a virtual art gallery with work by Sato, [[Hideki Nakazawa]], and others.

In March of 2022, an [https://compu-lsd.com/archive/interviews/Quit%20Volume%201/ interview] of Sato with a Japanese [[Magazines|magazine]] named ''Quit'' was unearthed. In the interview, Sato discusses Compu Movie and his early work. The scans were made by the user beanstalk, and shared by FELON. A transcription of this interview was also made by Chia.

In April of 2024, Sato posted a tweet with the first known image of Compu Movie's cover in full color, claiming to have found it in storage. A copy of Compu Movie was sold in a lucky bag at Sato's April 13 [https://lig-20240413.peatix.com/ live event] in Tokyo. It was purchased by community member Nnnn and the purchase was funded by mav6771. Digitization is complete, and all ripped content were uploaded to [https://youtu.be/PprmNoG3vXQ?si=x3ZIO2IA4naFcNES YouTube] by adam2.

An art book was published the same year by Tierrart, limited to 1000 copies. The pages are held loose-leaf with an outer cover.
