Chu-Teng (中天, Chūten lit. Mid-Heaven) is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Outside Directors Company and published by Sony Music Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. It is the sequel to Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou.

Copies of the game became elusive in the years following its release, making it a holy grail of sorts for the fan community. At the end of June 2013, an anonymous user on 4chan's /vr/ board came forward with a Mac copy and shared the disc image a few days later.

Development

A hidden message in the game's files by programmer Yasuo Higano reveals that Chu-Teng's code was written in six months. Higano also expresses that he originally joined the industry to work on PlayStation games, so working in the comparatively simple Macromedia Director crushed his ego and made him feel like he wasn't a real programmer. He appears to have left OSD soon after Chu-Teng's release. The company would begin working on PlayStation software within a couple years of his departure.

According to the March 1996 issue of Wired magazine, a North American release of Chu-Teng was planned for mid-1996. Additionally, the June 1996 issue of Taiwanese gaming publication Soft World Magazine mentions that the game was featured at Sony Interactive's booth during that year's E3. Despite this, an official localization ultimately never hit the market.

Plot

After having regained his soul back from Tong-Nou, Rin is visited by two parts of a creature from above called Nan-shu. He says Chu-Teng is in danger due to the light fighting against the darkness and in dire need of Rin's help. Rin traverse through the heart of Chu-Teng, the three palaces of Sun, Moon and Star, and even the Magatama Planet, to retrieve the missing parts of Nanshu's face, and collect each palace's sacred weapons to combat the Darkness and eventually the Supreme Darkness Chui-hei.
